Google’s DeepMind can control a robotic arm to beat ordinary table tennis players, according to a new study. But Fan Zhendong, the 2024 gold medalist for individual and team men’s table tennis, can rest easy: The AI-powered robot could only beat players at a medium level, and only on certain occasions, which was published but has not been reviewed by experts in this field.
Robots can now cook and clean, but they struggle to quickly respond to real-world environmental information. Achieving human-level performance in terms of accuracy (准确性), speed and generality still remains a great challenge in many fields.
To overcome this limitation, the researchers combined an industrial robot arm with a customized version of DeepMind’s powerful learning algorithms (算法). DeepMind uses neural networks to gradually learn new information. The system was also trained to master specific aspects of the game — for example, the rules, the techniques of playing — with real-world and simulated (模拟的) data in algorithms.
As the AI learned, the researchers collected data on its strengths, weaknesses and limitations. Then, they fed this information back to the AI program, thus giving DeepMind a realistic impression of its abilities. The system picked which skills or plans to use in the moment, considering its competitors’ strengths and weaknesses, just like a human table-tennis player might. Most of the human players seemed to like playing against the system. They agreed that playing with the robot was fun and attractive.
The new approach could be useful for a wide range of applications that call for quick responses in changing physical environments, as the researchers said.
